There’s a lot of ways we can go about learning how to draw comics.

We can learn from the experiences of seasoned pros, who have broken through the inevitable obstacles to mastery and now offer their wisdom and insights so that we can avoid the same pitfalls.

Others might prefer to walk their own path, seeing each challenge they overcome as a new discovery about themselves as an artist. We all seek an artistic identity of our own and what better way to be unique and authentic then to be completely self taught in your chosen craft?

There are pros and cons to every road you’ll go down before arriving at the end destination, but ultimately it’s your desired outcome that will determine which one you take.

In Episode 11 of the How To Draw Comics Podcast we discuss these two conflicting choices – should you be bold enough to walk your own path, or is it simply more optimal to learn from those who have already successfully done what you’re trying to do?

In reality, both paths will work, but especially when they’re merged into one. The question is, at which point should we take off the training wheels and pedal on our own?

As you listen, you’ll be able to watch the creation of the album art for this episode. Since the topic focuses on choosing between your own path or following in the footsteps of someone else, I decided to take the opportunity to illustrate a tribute to one of my most favorite Manga Series of all time – Berserk.

This anime follows the story of a character named Guts who must make a similar choice – choose between joining the quest for someone else’s dreams or following his own ambitions.

I adored working on this piece, and although I was at the drawing board for just over 7 hours straight, the time flew by as I penciled, inked and colored this illustration all in one sitting.
