In today’s video we’ll be taking a look at the now infamous Snowflake and Safe Space, from Marvel’s SJW line up of the New Warriors.
These characters have copped a ton of criticism over their near satirical representation of the LGBTQ+ community. Instead of bringing more diversity to their cast of heroes, Safe Space and Snowflake represent a lackluster attempt in both character design and concept.
There’s been a lot of coverage on these characters already, so in this presentation, I’ll be taking a constructive approach, highlighting why these character designs don’t work and explaining what they might have done instead to leave a better impression on their target audience.
We’ll also be contrasting and comparing the original designs of Snowflake and Safe Space to their re-imagined counterparts, developed by the talented Andrew Huerta.
If you like Andrew’s work, be sure to check out his IndieGoGo campaign for SOVEREIGN at: https://igg.me/at/sovereigncomic/x/20658139#/
I hope that you enjoy this video and take away a ton of insight on what makes a great character design and why!
Thanks for watching and until next time – keep on drawing.
