DC Comics has announced it is selling directly to two large mail order comic book retailers. They are offering “distributor” level discounts to these retailers and allowing them to also sell to individual brick and mortar comic book stores as smaller discounts (essentially treating the shops the same as comic book fans). Mail order comic book retailers sell new comics for up to 40% off cover price, much cheaper than comic book stores can afford to sell the same comic books for. This new arrangement will be followed by other comic book publishers making brick and mortar comic book stores obsolete within a few years.
DC Comics made all these distribution changes without a communication strategy leaving unanswered questions, confusion and tremendous anxiety for comic book store owners. Check out the video and get my take!
