Sometimes all your comic art needs is an outline to get the point across. And hey, as a style, that’s more than acceptable.
But what if you want to take it up a notch? How do we really make our illustrations pop off the page with that added edge of 3D’ness?
See, you can only describe so much with an outline alone; sure, the shape of your drawing, it’s design, and the key contours.
That’s all good and well.
But when it comes to showing form, lighting and thus true three dimensionality, the most powerful tool in your arsenal of comic art know-how is by far RENDERING.
To be real with you, rendering is still something I struggle with on a daily basis. There’s so many ways to tackle it, and every approach has it’s own method.
Figuring out a rendering style that jibes well with your desired comic art aesthetic can also be a challenge.
Luckily for us, Comic Art Instructor Ed Foychuk has a new course out that focuses specifically on Rendering Comics!: https://gumroad.com/a/507974771/JFTSu
Let’s not sugar coat it, Rendering is a specialized skill-set that requires a solid knowledge of lighting, form and technique across multiple mediums.
That’s a lot to cover for one instructor. So Ed has enlisted an entire team of guest instructors in this course to cover pretty much everything you can think of when it comes to rendering comics.
Here’s a break down of what each Instructor will teach you throughout this whopping 7 hour course.
Ed Foychuk – Starts us off with units that help explain Lighting. Going over lighting is important before you start rendering because before you learn HOW to render, you should learn the WHERE and WHY. Ed explains it all in a variety of units ranging from simple to complex.
Chris Graves – Walks us through his rendering process – showing us how pencils can bring a character to life!!
Mike Van Orden – Takes us through penciling techniques, explaining how to use the pencil in various ways that incorporate teachings from the lighting units, and give our drawings form.
Walden Wong – Our master inker, explains how you approach rending with inks. Whether digitally or traditionally, these techniques and approaches hold true. So strap in and enjoy these lessons from a professional!
Tim Goernert – Goes through tons of approaches to inking various subjects. It’s worth the watch and he explains his reasoning for each step and pen stroke.
Deth Phimmasone – Explains the ins and outs of rendering with markers. He gives some explanation as to the supplies suggested, and then delves into different techniques that’ll help you bring your drawings to life.
By the end of this course we promise you that you will be far more confident, not only in your rendering skills, but your understanding of the ‘where’ and ‘why’ that so often eludes beginning artists.
So join us in this awesome adventure, and let’s bring your drawings to life!!: https://gumroad.com/a/507974771/JFTSu
