GenCon, never been my bag, I want to go to Gary Con and play with the old masters, love the Old School Renaissance, OSR, studied OSRIC plenty and lurked for ages on Dragonsfoot studying the different ways of doing initiative and running segments in 1e. BTB By the Book has always been complicated but the Gygaxian rules were epic and filled a man with a simple uncomplicated joy.
Turns out GenCon is denying TSR Games entry and states that “our goal is to build off the good, acknowledge the bad, and work toward a present free from racism, misogyny, and homophobia.”
TSR Games from what I can tell just keeps repeating “Keep RPGs Fantasy”. Can’t take issue with that. These days they tell us orcs being evil is racist somehow. I don’t know about any of you non-whites, but I never felt like an orc.
GenCon, if you remember, is where that dude Hamburgler got punched by a pretty they/them, if I recall correctly, they were wearing a great dress. Then the guy getting punched got banned. Guess GenCon is still leading the charge against reason and rationale. As far as I know TSR Games is at most guilty of repeating that Gygax wasn’t a bigot – and (a) that’s true, and (b) it’s called familial loyalty. Gygax was a man. Good and evil cut through the hearts of all men. He was one of the leading lights, and we shouldn’t forget that, and that’s why we can all enjoy #TTRPG today. Dungeons and Dragons is a hobby for everyone.
Seems like everyone is trying to paint us old school gamers OSRIC players Gygax, Jim Ward, Weis and Hickman loving players as bigots. Boggles my mind.
My quick background, I’m over 40, what people would call colored even though I feel like a regular guy, sexually diverse, and tall.
Never had a problem playing with any crew, always had laughs. Why? Because it’s about the game, having fun, surviving. Had fun playing 5e even couple years back when it was all the rage, it was hard at the time for me to get a 1e or OD&D game going. Gotta be flexible in life. In the end wasn’t super enthused about 5e, DEX is the god stat, and everyone is a super hero.
I want to die in life, and in my game. I want to try, I want to win, I want to fail, I want to taste the agony of defeat. Victory just aint as sweet without it.
Anyhow, Dragonlance was always the game that brought in more women. Turns out that was in the 80s. Younguns want to paint us as old bigots, trouble is, we were more open to everyone, we were color blind. The only colors we cared about were the colors of your dice, because dice are cool and dang it’s nice to have a nice set.
GiantLands is coming out and it’s by Jim Ward. We did a great interview with the fine fellow. Honored. I don’t care what GenCon does, but they’re losing the plot. Guess I’m going to GaryCon when I can come down to the states and learn something from the old school cool real cats.
Yeah, and if you’re wondering what the background is, that’s from BulletMaker, the new comic that we’re releasing, real soon now, fully drawn, inked, full of maximum damage. Stay tuned.
