David Hume famously said “you cannot derive an ought from an is”. This means you cannot derive moral prescriptions from descriptive reality—science is separate from values. But there are moral prescriptions. Where do they come from and how/why are they sustained over time? I think of morality more like language. It’s about behavior between people. My definition of morality is “a set of rules that binds people into a cooperative community.” Determining these rules is politics. The preferences start as subjective but the point of morality is to foster a thriving society. So those preferences cannot stay arbitrary forever. To thrive the system must promote prosocial behaviors over more self destructive ones. – Adam
