GARY “Moondog” COLABUENO: National Comic Expert & Historian

by 03.15.2023

GARY COLABUENO has been a life-long collector of comic books since he bought his first issues off the spinner rack at the local drug store in his hometown of Joliet, IL in 1959. For the next 10 years he was a crazy collector until cars & girls lured him away.
Like many baby boomers, Gary got the collecting bug again in 1975 and decided to become a dealer to help offset the costs of collecting. He opened his first comic-book shop in 1978 in downtown Mt. Prospect, IL. Within 10 years, he grew that shop into the legendary 6-store chain of Moondog’s pop culture shops.
In 1981 Gary designed & started manufacturing protective plastic sleeves for comic books & created the first brand name in the field of comic book preservation – ComiCovers.
In 1983, Bob Overstreet asked Gary to be an advisor to his price guide & he’s been a trusted senior pricing advisor to the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide — the bible of the hobby — for over 40 years.
Gary later purchased the Windy City Collection of 2,000 vintage Golden Age first issues. The Marvel Comics 1 from that collection sold in November 2019 for $1.26 million.
In 1992, Gary came on board as a partner in the Chicago Comicon. Under his leadership the convention grew to become the second-largest gathering of collectors in the country.
During this time Gary bought & sold tens of millions of dollars of vintage comic books. He’s now sold comics to collectors in every US state in & nearly every English-speaking country in the world.
