Globe Stove and Range Co. was formed in 1902 after taking over Fisher Steel Ranges. During WWI, the company manufactured mortar shells rather than stoves, and almost went bankrupt. It was saved by a group of investors and a new manager, Mark Brown, who lived in the Elliott House. In 1930, it merged with American Steel Products to become Globe American Corp.
During the ’30s, the company began to switch from manufacturing cast iron, coal-fired stoves and ranges and began making gas-fired units. The company developed a new steel gas range called the Dutch oven. When WWII started, Globe manufactured all-steel lifeboats for the U.S. Navy. After the war, they made a deal with Maytag and the Dutch oven became a Maytag brand.
