In the past I’ve noted that when environmental criteria is applied to fossil fuel or paper investments, the goal is to burn less fuel or use less paper. And when diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) metrics are applied to college admissions, employment, military or police recruitment or production of entertainment, it’s to draw less participation from certain groups, in this case whites, in institutions. Since participation in these institutions is largely voluntary, this requires mechanisms including discrimination so that targeted groups judge it is not worth the effort to participate (even against their own interests) or at least to keep quiet, and then if anyone steps out of line, they are targeted publicly to set an example.
