In the face of mounting attacks from some conservatives over its diversity and sustainability programs, rural lifestyle retailer Tractor Supply Company is taking extreme measures to get back in their good graces.

In a statement today, the retailer said it would “eliminate DEI roles and retire our current DEI goals” while withdrawing its carbon emission goals. It also said it would no longer submit data to the Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ+ advocacy group.

“We have heard from customers that we have disappointed them. We have taken this feedback to heart,” the company stated, adding that it will “further focus on rural America priorities including ag education, animal welfare, veteran causes and being a good neighbor and stop sponsoring nonbusiness activities like pride festivals and voting campaigns.”

The statement comes three weeks after the company was targeted on social media by conservative political commentator and filmmaker Robby Starbuck, whose projects include the documentary “The War on Children.” He began attacking Tractor Supply and its CEO and President Hal Lawton with an X post on June 6 that criticized the company’s LGBTQIA+ training for employees, DEI Council and other “woke priorities.” He called for his followers to “start buying what you can from other places” until the company makes changes.
