The design of the Monsters was inspired by this 1953 painting by Francis Bacon depicting Pope Innocent X. Bacons’s paintings often depict dreamlike or surreal images that blur the line between the conscious & unconscious mind. He employs cleaver usage of distorted or sometimes even disfigured scenes to convey a sense of unease or ambiguity in hopes of reflecting the human psyche & its contradictory nature.
