How Do Pro Artists Always Know Where to Start?

by 03.02.2025

My video art diary of my work for my independent comic book, The Lucent. This comic book art is actually for my trading card set, available to order at thelucentcomic.com. In it I’m colouring three panels that were very difficult to visualise beforehand. The only way for me to figure out how I wanted to colour them was to just begin, and see how it went, making adjustments along the way. I describe how I have many fundamental color theory techniques I can always rely on to get me through, including including understanding warms and cools, highlights and shadows, and the 60,30,10 rule. Watch as I work through these panels, and cycle through adjustment layers until I find the one I need for the look I’m going for.

My name is Michael Bancroft and I’m an independent comic book writer and artist. If you’re a fan of the indies, or comic books in general, especially European and French-style Bande Desinnée, then please check out my channel. I want to make more original content based on my own work, so if you’re interested in this kind of video, please hit like, subscribe, and leave a comment.
