How to use color to tell a story

by 03.05.2025

My video art diary of my work for my independent comic book, The Lucent. This comic book art is actually for my trading card set, available to order at thelucentcomic.com. In it I demonstrate how I make decisions about colour to assist with the story I’m telling. I explain why I chose to lay a blue filter over the base colors, then go through my reasoning behind choosing to overlay a cool, purple light on top of the orange, ambient glow of the wall lamp. I finish by highlighting how I feel the mix of the two colours have an ambiguous, tense feeling about them, which is what I hope to reflect in the scene.

My name is Michael Bancroft and I’m an independent comic book writer and artist. If you’re a fan of the indies, or comic books in general, especially European and French-style Bande Desinnée, then please check out my channel. I want to make more original content based on my own work, so if you’re interested in this kind of video, please hit like, subscribe, and leave a comment.
