What does it mean to create layered characters? In The Lucent: Waking Dream, the protagonist Ella is set upon by a couple of thugs, whom she proceeds to hurl around using her enhanced abilities. Weird and random, until you find out she’s actually dreaming. And that would be that if she were one dimensional. After all, that’s what heroes do in comics, isn’t it? They beat up bad guys. But wait… if it was her dream, that would mean her psyche came up with the thugs in the first place. What does that say about her state of mind? And why was she so ready to antagonise them? Layering unspoken questions like these onto a character’s plotline, and making the answers consequential to their arc, not only enriches the story, but also encourages readers to interact with the character on a level beyond what’s merely being presented.
