Why Hand-Drawn Comic Sound Effects Make Reading 1000x Better

by 05.06.2025

My video art diary of my work for my independent comic book, The Lucent. This sound effect lettering is for my upcoming crowdfunding campaign for my next book, Fractured Mind. In this video you can watch me draw as I warp perspective of a bas font, then go over the top by hand. I do this to integrate the lettering into the art, creating a more seamless experience for the reader. All my sound effects are hand drawn, and I always try adapt them to both the sound they’re supposed to represent, and the page they appear on.

My name is Michael Bancroft and I’m an independent comic book writer and artist. If you’re a fan of the indies, or comic books in general, especially European and French-style Bande Desinnée, then please check out my channel.
