When in Rome: Thermopylae Special

On this day (allegedly), in 480 BC, the army of the Achaemenid King of Kings, Xerxes I, met resistance from a coalition of 300 Spartans, and around 6700 hoplites from other City States at a narrow pass called “The Hot Gates” or in the Greek “Thermopylae.” This battle, namely the sacrifice of Leonidas and his 300, have captured the fascination of people since antiquity. Novels, plays, adaptations to the silver screen, all echoing the words put down by historians like Herodotus and Plutarch. So today on When in Rome, we discuss the Battle of Thermopylae and its legacy today.
