Guillermo del Toro finally brings Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to life on Netflix—and it might just be the definitive cinematic take. Not 100% faithful to the novel (what adaptation is?), but del Toro’s visionary direction elevates the story into something haunting, human, and visually breathtaking. The gothic sets are jaw-dropping, the creature design is a masterpiece, and the performances? Oscar Isaac as a tormented Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the tragic monster deliver career-best work.
If you love del Toro’s dark fairy-tale style (Pan’s Labyrinth, Shape of Water), this is essential viewing. Is it better than Branagh’s 1994 version? The Whale? The 1931 classic? Let’s break it down.
Drop your thoughts: Is this the Frankenstein we’ve been waiting for?
