Why a “Bad” Drawing Can Be a Good Thing

Hello friends! With over 20 years of experience as a creative professional and a background in comic art dating back to my childhood, my career now requires significant digital work. However, having spent most of my life creating “old school” art on real paper, it is important to me to maintain those traditional skills.

Reliance on the shortcuts and easy fixes of digital art can sometimes make it difficult to regain confidence when returning to physical media like pencils, inks, and brush pens. In this video, I share the trick I use to jumpstart my traditional skills: intentionally making “bad drawings.”

Watch as I set a short, nine-minute time window, utilize various tools, and force myself to make quick, imperfect decisions. Getting these “bad” sketches out of your system is a crucial step toward getting back into the groove with traditional materials. A sketchbook is the perfect place for this exercise. Don’t lean too heavily on digital tools; allow yourself to make mistakes so you can move on to creating masterpieces!
