DEATHSHROUD: Forged in Shadow – 90s Inspired Supernatural Thriller Comic

The trade paperback edition of Deathshroud: Forged in Shadows (Part 1) is a hefty 192-page graphic novel that serves as a collected resurrection of the indie supernatural anti-hero series from writer Chad Larsson and Dream Key Studios. https://rippasend.com/campaign/deathshroud-forged-in-shadows-pt-1/

If you’re a fan of Image Comics’ Spawn, Todd McFarlane’s brooding symbiote-infused anti-heroes, or even Marvel’s Venom during its edgier eras, this book is engineered to scratch that exact itch. It’s unapologetically retro in vibe—gritty, violent, over-the-top supernatural battles, tormented protagonists, demonic forces, and a heavy dose of vengeance—but it updates the formula with solid modern art direction and pacing that doesn’t drag despite the page count.

The core story follows John Azrael, a battle-hardened special forces operative (second lieutenant) who’s essentially an orphan raised in the military life. During a black-ops mission in Colombia that goes catastrophically wrong, he dies—or at least he should have. Instead, he’s pulled back from the brink and reborn as the literal son of Death itself, draped in the “Deathshroud,” a living, symbiotic cloak of shadows and necrotic power that grants him insane strength, regeneration, shadowy manipulation, and the ability to channel deathly energies against infernal threats.

It’s a classic “cursed gift” origin: he’s now an immortal(ish) weapon against demons and otherworldly horrors, but at the cost of his humanity, his connections, and constant inner torment. The narrative kicks off with high-stakes action sequences that feel ripped from a 90s extreme-era comic—explosive gunfights blending into supernatural carnage, grotesque creature designs, and a protagonist who looks like a hooded reaper crossed with a Venom symbiote.

Larsson grounds the over-the-top elements in John’s military background, making his tactical mindset clash interestingly with the chaotic, otherworldly powers. There’s loyalty to old squad mates, a sense of fate vs. free will, and a brewing war between heavenly and abyssal forces where John becomes a wildcard hybrid of light and darkness.Art-wise, this collection is a showcase. The team rotates talent but maintains a cohesive dark, detailed style: V. Ken Marion (known for dynamic DC covers) brings kinetic figure work and moody shadows, Andrew Dalhouse handles rich, atmospheric coloring that makes the blacks pop and the gore glisten, Sinisa Matic contributes to interiors with gritty linework, and new material features heavy hitters like Caanan White (Rippaverse regular) for some of the freshest sequences.

The variant covers alone are collector bait—Marino, Viktor Bogdanovic, Ryan Stegman (peak Venom artist), and Brett Booth all deliver killer interpretations of the Deathshroud look.Pacing is strong for a nearly 200-page book. It collects prior material without feeling padded, then launches into the new 96-page chunk that escalates the stakes—introducing bigger demonic threats, personal betrayals, and hints at a larger cosmology involving Death as a creator figure (the tagline “What if Death created life?” isn’t just marketing fluff).

Action scenes are brutal and visceral: limbs torn, shadows devouring enemies, high body counts. Dialogue is functional and punchy—Larsson avoids excessive exposition dumps, letting the visuals carry the mythos.

Overall, Deathshroud: Forged in Shadows is one of the standout indie supernatural action books of the mid-2020s. It’s gritty, fun, and doesn’t pull punches. If you’re craving that Spawn-meets-Venom energy with indie freedom (no corporate mandates), grab this TPB. Highly recommended for fans of dark anti-heroes—easily one of the best packages in the Rippaverse-adjacent space.
