You were lied to about Medusa… sort of.

The modern version of Medusa often presents her as a tragic symbol of female rage: a woman assaulted by Poseidon, punished by Athena, killed by Perseus, and turned into a weapon.

But in earlier Greek mythology, Medusa was not always portrayed that way. In sources like Homer and Hesiod, the Gorgons are terrifying monsters, and Hesiod gives us the three sisters: Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa.

The famous tragic version of Medusa as a beautiful woman wronged by Poseidon and Athena comes later from the Roman poet Ovid in Metamorphoses.

So is the popular Medusa story wrong? Not exactly. It’s just not the oldest version.
