Meryl Streep has been confirmed as the voice of Aslan in Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, gender-swapping C.S. Lewis’s Christ figure for Netflix’s 2027 adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia. Lewis created Aslan as an explicit allegory for Jesus Christ — a male lion who sings Narnia into existence in a deliberate echo of Genesis — making the decision to cast a woman as his voice one of the most theologically significant creative choices in recent Hollywood history. With Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey, and Carey Mulligan also confirmed, the Narnia reboot is shaping up as a test case for whether beloved Christian literature can survive progressive Hollywood adaptation.
