Christopher Nolan confirmed in a TIME magazine interview published after The Odyssey’s July 17, 2026 opening that he deliberately cut Homer’s original ending because he found it misogynistic — replacing the epic’s 2,800-year-old conclusion, in which Odysseus returns home in triumph and restores order to his kingdom, with a modernist guilt narrative in which the hero voluntarily exiles himself. The admission confirms what critics of Nolan’s adaptation argued from the beginning: that the film’s departures from Homer were not creative choices made in service of the story, but ideological corrections applied to source material the director found morally inadequate.
