The organization founded by Damon Knight in 1965, whose early membership included Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, and Ursula Le Guin, has lowered its membership bar to $100 in lifetime career earnings verified by sworn affidavit, burned through its president, interim president, deputy executive director, and event coordinator in three weeks in 2024, and lost its Executive Director after one year without explanation. SFWA still runs the Nebula Awards and carries sixty years of name recognition — but the professional guild that Asimov helped build is now struggling to keep its own lights on.
