Wizards of the Coast revealed Dark Sun — the beloved post-apocalyptic Dungeons and Dragons campaign setting — at Gen Con 2026 for a 2027 return, two years after the OGL controversy, the pride flag rebranding of D&D, and an ongoing workforce union battle drove away a significant share of the player base. The Dark Sun announcement is either a genuine course correction or another marketing gesture from a company that has never publicly acknowledged what went wrong — and WotC’s track record of apologizing for specific actions without changing its institutional direction makes the distinction worth examining carefully before the D&D community celebrates too soon.
