D&D’s Forgotten Co-Creator Speaks Out!

by 08.05.2026

Robert J. Kuntz — one of a handful of people physically present at the creation of Dungeons and Dragons in 1972, co-Dungeon Master of Gary Gygax’s original Greyhawk campaign, and co-author of Supplement I: Greyhawk and the first Deities and Demigods — publicly accused Wizards of the Coast of using their own official D&D history book to permanently stigmatize him and an entire generation of original creators who built the game before it became a commercial product. The accusation follows a pattern of major gaming and comics companies profiting from foundational creators while controlling the historical narrative — a pattern that has now hit D&D’s own founding circle decades after the game became a billion-dollar franchise under WotC and Hasbro ownership.
