The Horror Writers Association voted to strip trustee Sèphera Girón of her position within hours of her August 2026 “In the Trenches” newsletter column arguing that HWA’s anti-AI culture had become hypocritical — pointing out that HWA’s own Stokercon used the AI-powered Sched app while enforcing anti-AI policies against members. Chuck Wendig, whose 2015 Star Wars novel Aftermath was widely mocked for lines like describing a ship as moving “herky-jerky up-and-down left-and-right,” used his blog to dismiss Girón’s piece as unhinged rather than engage with her argument. The incident is the latest entry in a pattern of publishing and writing organizations removing members, destroying book deals, and firing staff over AI positions held without evidence of actual policy violations — and Girón’s removal for writing one column in the organization’s own newsletter may be the most extreme case yet.
