In October 2010, WisCon — the oldest feminist science fiction convention in the world — stripped Elizabeth Moon’s Guest of Honor invitation for WisCon 2011 over a blog post about citizenship and immigration, five years before “cancel culture” became a mainstream term. Moon was a military science fiction author with a distinguished career including the Nebula Award-winning Deed of Paksenarrion, and her Guest of Honor status was revoked within weeks of the post drawing online criticism despite her public engagement with the concerns raised. The 2010 WisCon incident is one of the earliest documented examples of the pattern that would define SF fandom’s next fifteen years — and the SF convention circuit has been running the same playbook against authors with dissenting political views ever since.
