Gregg Press released 225 science fiction hardcovers between 1974 and 1980 — giving Philip K. Dick his first hardcover publication anywhere, putting Isaac Asimov’s Lucky Starr series into hardcover for the first time, and producing matching cloth-bound collector sets of Poul Anderson’s Dominic Flandry saga, Fritz Leiber’s Fafhrd and Gray Mouser novels, and Andre Norton’s Witch World series, all on acid-free paper with library bindings built to survive decades. Late in its run Gregg Press also reprinted 17 Star Trek novels in hardcover — including early John M. Ford and Diane Duane titles — before G.K. Hall was absorbed into Macmillan and the line was discontinued. Clean, unmarked Gregg Press volumes now command significant prices on the secondary market, and a generation of SF collectors has never heard of the publisher that gave their favorite authors their first hardcover shelf life.
