You’ve Never Heard Of The Science Fiction Author Who Helped Ronald Reagan Win The Cold WAR!

by 08.17.2026

Jerry Pournelle chaired the Citizens’ Advisory Council on National Space Policy from 1980 to 1994 — the group whose reports shaped Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative and whose third report was directly quoted in Reagan’s 1983 Star Wars speech — while simultaneously writing the military science fiction that David Weber, John Ringo, Larry Correia, and every serious milSF author working today is built on. He co-wrote The Mote in God’s Eye with Larry Niven, which Robert Heinlein called “possibly the finest science fiction novel I have ever read.” He predicted the internet in 1980. He won the first John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. He died in 2017 at eighty-four. SFWA never made him Grand Master. The mainstream SF conversation has been letting him drift from view for a decade — and the indie and crowdfunded SF space he helped build is steadily rebuilding his tradition without saying his name out loud.
