This FORGOTTEN Fantasy Writer’s Series Is WAY Better Than A Game Of Thrones!

by 08.19.2026

Katherine Kurtz published Deryni Rising in 1970 — a medieval fantasy set in a kingdom closely paralleling the British Isles, with Catholic theology taken seriously as a working part of the story, intricate court intrigue, persecuted minorities with psychic abilities, and a magic system built on hard-psionic theory — inventing the secondary-world historical fantasy subgenre that Guy Gavriel Kay, Lois McMaster Bujold, and arguably George R.R. Martin all work within. Critics at Reactor, Strange Horizons, and Black Gate have argued directly that A Song of Ice and Fire is legible as a response to the Deryni novels, with Martin deconstructing the Romantic assumptions Kurtz built into her work. Kurtz is eighty-one years old, still hosts a weekly reader chat on Sunday evenings, and her sixteen Deryni novels remain largely in print — awaiting the readers the mainstream fantasy conversation forgot to send her way.
