Wizards of the Coast confirmed at GenCon 2026 that the Dark Sun setting returning to Dungeons and Dragons in early 2027 will have its most controversial elements removed — with designers stating the setting’s reputation for slavery, genocide, and torture is “exactly the problem” they intend to address rather than preserve. Dark Sun’s original 1991 design by Troy Denning and Tim Brown built its identity entirely on a world where defiling magic, sorcerer-king tyranny, and genuine moral darkness distinguished it from every other D&D setting. WotC putting a content warning on their own GenCon reveal trailer before announcing cuts to the setting’s core darkness raises serious questions about whether the Dark Sun returning in 2027 will be Dark Sun at all — or a sanitized version designed to avoid controversy that was the entire point of the original.
