Harlan Ellison Wrote The Greatest Anti-AI Story Ever And His Estate Just Put ChatGPT Inside IT!

by 08.21.2026

J. Michael Straczynski, Babylon 5 creator and executor of the Harlan Ellison estate, included a ChatGPT-generated response to “I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream” in the new solo edition of Ellison’s most famous story — a short story about a murderous supercomputer that ended human civilization and tortured its survivors for eternity, widely considered one of the definitive anti-AI texts in science fiction. When fans objected, JMS published a lengthy defense that Fandom Pulse argues proves he fundamentally misunderstands the technology he’s defending his use of, conflating AI output quality with the actual concerns about training data, attribution, and authorial intent that critics of AI in creative contexts have been raising for years. The irony of putting ChatGPT inside the most famous anti-AI story in science fiction history is either lost on JMS or he thinks it’s clever — and his essay suggests the former.
