Orson Scott Card’s 2017 post-apocalyptic science fiction series Extinct — canceled by BYUtv after one season despite an 83% audience score — has cracked the top ten on Prime Video nine years later, prompting Card to announce Burning Water, the first novel in a new Extinct book series publishing through Tor in May 2027. Extinct was written by Card and collaborator Aaron Johnston, who co-wrote the First Formic War trilogy, and follows a group of humans revived by alien technology 400 years after the human race was exterminated — then tasked with rebuilding civilization in a hostile world. The show’s second life on Prime Video follows Dollhouse’s recent climb on the Apple TV Store sixteen years after Fox canceled it, suggesting streaming algorithms are finding audiences for faith-adjacent and family-friendly science fiction that original networks wrote off too quickly.
