Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey — the 1968 Hugo and Nebula Award-winning novel that launched the Dragonriders of Pern series — earns a 10 out of 10 on reread in 2026: a fix-up novel built from two separately published stories that reads more essential than most books planned as novels from page one, with Lessa as one of science fiction’s finest heroines and a time-travel structure that sold the series as science fiction wearing a fantasy costume. Despite multiple Hollywood option attempts — including a Warner Bros. deal that went nowhere — Dragonflight has never been adapted into a film or television series, while House of the Dragon, Rings of Power, and The Wheel of Time have all received major streaming productions. The real reason Hollywood keeps passing on Pern may say more about what the industry is willing to greenlight than about the quality of the source material.
