Martin’s failure to complete The Winds of Winter — 5,491 days after A Dance with Dragons and counting — framing the wait as understandable rather than examining what fans have actually lost while Martin wrote physics papers, opened cocktail bars, ran a charity livestream that mocked the wait, and consulted on HBO shows that ended without source material to guide them. Patrick Rothfuss has also gone fourteen years without The Doors of Stone. Jon Del Arroz responds to Greene’s apologist framing and argues that fantasy book YouTube’s tendency to make excuses for major authors who don’t finish their work is a disservice to the readers who built those authors’ careers.
