X-Files creator Chris Carter told Polygon that Ryan Coogler’s reboot — currently in post-production on its pilot, starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as new FBI paranormal investigators — will likely need Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny to appear in order to transfer audience trust to the new leads. Carter, who is credited as executive producer on the reboot without reading the scripts, simultaneously confirmed he has his own X-Files story to tell and doesn’t know whether his plans and Coogler’s version will end up complementary or in direct competition. With Carter also releasing a director’s cut of The X-Files: I Want to Believe restoring material Fox originally cut, two competing visions for the same franchise are now actively in motion — one from the man who created Mulder and Scully, one from the studio’s chosen successor who cast around them.
