WorldCon 2026 in Anaheim included in its official programming a Latina theater group whose materials spell America as “Amerikkka” — deliberately invoking the Ku Klux Klan as a political statement — while refusing to provide safety guarantees to conservative author Jon Del Arroz, who has previously been removed from Bay Area science fiction convention spaces and has documented incidents at prior events. WorldCon also declined to give any platform or acknowledgment to the SaveStargate fan campaign despite it being one of the largest fan organizing efforts in science fiction in 2026. The Hugo Award convention’s programming choices and its selective application of safety policies to politically disfavored attendees illustrate why conservative, Catholic, and politically independent science fiction fans have been building their own convention spaces outside the SFWA and WorldCon ecosystem.
