John Brunner won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1969 for Stand on Zanzibar — a 1968 novel set in the year 2010 that predicted the internet, coined the word “worm” for self-replicating computer malware, predicted mass shootings (which he called “muckers”), predicted an African-American president in 2010, predicted the corporate takeover of African nation-states, and predicted the smartphone media environment of the 2020s with uncanny precision. Brunner was the first British author to win the Hugo for Best Novel, and his Club of Rome Quartet — Stand on Zanzibar, The Jagged Orbit, The Sheep Look Up, and The Shockwave Rider — stands as the most sustained and accurate body of twenty-first century prophecy in twentieth-century science fiction. By the time he died in Glasgow in 1995 at age sixty, most of his eighty-plus novels were out of print.
