The 2026 Hugo Best Novel Is A ROMANCE Novel And The Sad Puppies Were Right All ALONG!

by 09.01.2026

he 2026 Hugo Award for Best Novel, announced August 30 at LAcon V in Anaheim during WorldCon, went to Alix E. Harrow’s The Everlasting — a time-loop fantasy romance between a lady knight and a historian, set in a British Empire analogue and described by reviewers as a study of colonial propaganda and nationalist myth-making. The award is the latest evidence that the Hugo Award for Best Science Fiction Novel routinely goes to books that are not science fiction, confirming the central argument of the 2015 Sad Puppies campaign led by Larry Correia and Brad Torgersen — that the Hugos represent a politically aligned WorldCon in-group rather than the genre’s readership. Eleven years after the WorldCon community destroyed the Sad Puppies campaign, the 2026 Best Novel winner is exactly the kind of book Correia was describing when he said the awards had stopped being about science fiction.
