Michael Tierney, the writer and publisher behind decades of Edgar Rice Burroughs licensed fiction including Tarzan comics, was rejected for SFWA membership despite meeting the organization’s stated credential requirements — with Tierney publicly stating his rejection was not about his qualifications. The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association’s bylaws give its membership credentials committee discretion to reject applicants “regardless of qualifications,” a clause previously used against conservative and Catholic authors including Jon Del Arroz. Combined with SFWA’s eight consecutive female Grand Master selections without a single man named since William Gibson in 2019, the Tierney rejection adds to a documented pattern of the organization applying its discretionary membership standards in ways that consistently disadvantage male authors with traditional or conservative perspectives.
