LAcon V, the 2026 World Science Fiction Convention held in Anaheim, California, released final attendance numbers on August 30th that confirm what critics of the Hugo Award convention have been saying for years — WorldCon is losing its grip on the science fiction community. Despite being held in the Los Angeles area, the most favorable possible US location for a Worldcon, LAcon V underperformed expectations, continuing a pattern of declining attendance, controversial programming choices, and an organization increasingly out of step with the broader science fiction readership it claims to represent.
