The Last Dangerous Visions, Harlan Ellison’s fifty-years-delayed final anthology, was published by Blackstone on October 1, 2024 — without Anne McCaffrey’s story “The Bones Do Lie,” one of roughly 120 pieces Ellison acquired over four decades from authors who waited their entire careers for publication. Estate executor J. Michael Straczynski, listed alongside Ellison as co-editor, selected nearly a third of the final anthology’s contents. The cuts and replacements document how a promised anthology built on Ellison’s reputation as a champion of writers ended with significant editorial control in the hands of his executor — and authors like McCaffrey who sold Ellison stories in the 1970s watching their work disappear from the final book while other material was added.
