Showrunner Graham Yost confirmed in interviews that the season’s nine-episode Before Times storyline following Congressman Daniel Keene exists because Hugh Howey’s source novel Shift barely features Juliette Nichols — and keeping Rebecca Ferguson on screen every week required inventing a parallel narrative from whole cloth. The result is a 6 out of 10 season where two episodes of actual plot movement justified ten episodes of manufactured table-setting, setting up Lost-style mystery box concerns heading into Season 4’s adaptation of Howey’s final book Dust.
