Star Trek writer David Gerrold — author of The Trouble with Tribbles and a central figure in the Hugo Awards campaign that used bloc voting and convention politics to defeat the Sad Puppies movement in 2015 and 2016 — published a post in September 2026 urging his readers not to engage in cancel culture against J.K. Rowling, arguing that Harry Potter is too big to fail and that attacking Rowling’s work harms fans more than the author. Gerrold’s selective application of anti-cancel culture principles — opposing it when it targets Rowling while having actively participated in it against the Sad Puppies and their associated authors — is the clearest illustration yet of how cancel culture’s critics and practitioners in science fiction fandom are often the same people, depending on whose work is being targeted.
