LAcon V, the 2026 World Science Fiction Convention held in Anaheim during WorldCon weekend, resulted in a COVID outbreak among attendees — and the Bluesky posts from progressive science fiction fans calling it a superspreader event are circulating widely as a snapshot of a subculture that has not updated its pandemic response framework since 2021. The Hugo Award convention that hosted a Latina theater group whose materials spelled America as “Amerikkka,” awarded Best Novel to a gothic romance about colonialism, and failed to provide safety guarantees to conservative attendees now has its community processing illness with language and emotional intensity appropriate to the early stages of a novel pandemic.
