Amazon Prime Video canceled Spider-Noir after one season despite 851 million viewing minutes in its first week, a No. 2 Nielsen ranking for original series, 11 Creative Arts Emmy nominations — more than any other Prime Video show — and five Emmy wins announced days after the cancellation. The stated reason is cost: $400 to $460 million for eight episodes filmed twice in color and true black-and-white. Meanwhile The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is getting a fourth season despite declining audiences and over $100 million per episode in reported costs — a direct result of Amazon spending $250 million on the IP rights before production began, creating a sunk cost that makes cancellation unthinkable regardless of performance. Spider-Noir was canceled for being expensive. Rings of Power survives for being too expensive to cancel. Nicolas Cage’s Ben Reilly won’t return.
