The John W. Campbell Letters, Volume I collects 610 pages of correspondence from the editor of Astounding Science Fiction who built the Golden Age of Science Fiction almost single-handedly — including the March 1959 letter rejecting Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers manuscript for violating Campbell’s foundational craft principle of showing rather than telling, the 1942 letters laying out his “socio-technical pressure” theory predicting a lunar landing by 1965, and exchanges with Isaac Asimov, A.E. van Vogt, and the 283 writers whose careers he shaped. Campbell also spent years promoting Dianetics after publishing L. Ron Hubbard’s original article and claimed credit for suggesting Hubbard reconstitute it as a religion — making the Letters a portrait of the most influential editor in science fiction history at his most brilliant and his most credulous simultaneously.
