A year after BasedCon founder Robert Kroese banned Jon Del Arroz from the alternative science fiction convention over his coverage of woke Dungeons and Dragons, the ban remains in place and Kroese continues to attack Del Arroz publicly — including devoting a 20-minute panel at BasedCon to personally criticizing him, threatening physical assault if Del Arroz attended, and calling him a “diminutive troublemaker” despite Fandom Pulse being the most widely read conservative SF/F journalism outlet in the space. The BasedCon situation is a case study in how the same gatekeeping behavior that defines WorldCon and SFWA can emerge in spaces that claim to be alternatives — and why calling out woke D&D apparently makes you unwelcome even at a convention named for being based.
