Mayday, the Apple TV+ Cold War buddy action comedy directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein — the team behind Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and now attached to the new Star Trek movie — earns a 4 out of 10 despite a genuinely strong first hour built around Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh’s chemistry, sharp 1980s period comedy, and a hiding-in-a-closet sequence that earns real tension through comic timing. Approximately one hour in the film stops completely to deliver a ten-minute Apple TV+ ideological message about Russia oppressing gay people through a character who exists solely for that scene and contributes nothing to the plot — followed immediately by action sequences that abandon the film’s internal logic entirely with stolen nuclear missile launchers and incompetent Soviet guards. The review serves as an evaluation of whether Daley and Goldstein can be trusted with Star Trek, and the answer is conditional.
