Gen Con owner and Wizards of the Coast founder Peter Adkison announced he is abandoning all planned video productions rather than use AI or compete against companies that do — despite describing AI video as “stunningly good” with cost savings of “pennies on the dollar” compared to traditional production. Adkison, who built his fortune commercializing Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons before selling Wizards to Hasbro in 2001, said the AI fears are “overhyped” but quit anyway because using the technology would upset personal friends. The man who built one of the most commercially aggressive companies in tabletop gaming history retreated from a technology he admits works, calling it peace of mind while his competitors use it freely.
